What students should be able to do or understand by the end of the course:

Beginners:

  • Use calligraphy tools and materials correctly and confidently
  • Write historical scripts using a square-edged nib (e.g., uncial, foundational hand)

After learning one script:

  • Rule up guidelines and create a simple layout for calligraphy pieces
  • Use different types of ink or gouache, including basic colour applications
  • Create simple projects incorporating basic decorative or craft techniques

As you progress:

  • Learn complementary skills such as colour theory, decorative elements, and layout design
  • Enjoy making original projects that reflect personal style and creativity

What students need to bring:

For beginners

Day 1 Essentials

  • 1 x HB (or H) pencil
  • Eraser
  • 30cm ruler or longer (or a T-square if available)
  • Calligraphy marker, 5mm tip (recommended brands: ZIG or Edding)
  • A3 layout paper pad (good quality preferred; avoid cheap shop brands)

From Day 2 onwards:

Your tutor will explain these items on Day 1. If you are unsure, please wait before purchasing.

  • Broad-edge dip pen in size 4mm (e.g. Leonardt Tape nib 4mm or Mitchell nib size 0 with reservoir)
  • Non-waterproof ink(e.g. Higgins Eternal or walnut ink) or fountain pen ink or Designer’s
  • Gouache
  • Mixing brushes
  • Small palette
  • Water pot
  • Kitchen paper

For project work;

  • Additional materials may be required. Your tutor will inform you during the course.

Tutor Information:

I discovered my love for Western calligraphy after moving to England, building on a lifelong appreciation of letters and books. I studied through adult education, private tuition, and workshops with internationally renowned calligraphers. I hold a Certificate of Teaching Calligraphy from CLAS and have been teaching since 2014, offering a flexible, student-focused approach that supports individual learning. I am passionate about sharing the beauty of calligraphy and helping others find joy and confidence in their creative journey.
