For complete beginners, this course will cover the basics to get you started on your crochet journey and give you the confidence to tackle simple projects by yourself.
About this course
You’ll learn all the essentials to get you started – chain stitches, double crochet and treble stitches, and more. You’ll also learn how to work basic granny squares, and how to join them together decoratively, to turn them into a scarf, a blanket, a bag, a cushion cover, or whatever you wish. You’ll also learn how to follow a simple pattern and chart, and which hook and yarn to choose for which project. At the end of the course, you’ll be ready to work on your own, and be given guidance on a suitable project to choose to complete by yourself.
What do I need to join this course?
Suitable for adults, no experience necessary, but you do need to have some manual dexterity and be prepared to practice what you learn at home between lessons.
What do I need to have with me?
Bring a pencil and paper, and if possible some scissors, a few balls of double knitting (DK) yarn in different colours and a 4mm hook. Or balls of Aran-weight yarn and a 5mm hook. (There will be hooks plus small balls of wool to buy at the lesson - £5 cash for a hook and three colours of yarn.)
What will I gain from this course?
As well as a grounding in the basics of crochet and the confidence to work on a project yourself, you’ll have embarked upon a wonderful, mindful and creative hobby, that’ll provide a sense of achievement and pleasure for years to come.
About The Tutor
Annie Windley learned to knit and crochet at the age of 6 and has been crafting ever since. A qualified teacher, she initially worked in a middle school, where she encouraged the young students to create with yarn in after-school clubs. Annie spent most of her career as a journalist on women’s weekly magazines, where she also helped run weekly knitting and crochet skill-building get-togethers. After leaving the magazine world, Annie began sharing her love of yarn-based crafts by teaching freelance, both in Thanet and London, designing and selling hand-made goods and patterns, and writing a craft-based blog on her website pickingupstitches.com. She is looking forward to spreading the love of knitting and crochet to more students through Coastal Community Learning.
