Who can join this course:
As this sewing and clothesmaking course is project based, it is suitable for both beginners and
those with more experience of dressmaking.

Course Description:

Students work on their own projects, usually chosen with consultation with the tutor, who can
advise depending on a students experience and ability.
The aim of the course is to enable students to work independently and confidently, using a
commercial pattern and a sewing machine, to produce well made garments that fit.
Beginners are encouraged to attempt a simple garment with a variety of processes, such as seams,
darts, sleeves, facings, collars and zips. They will also learn about body measurements and pattern
laying. More experienced students will make more complex garments, having the opportunity to practice
and improve skills.

For the first session, those with experience can either bring along the project they are hoping to
make, or they can join the beginners to make a simple article directed by the tutor.

Please note we are NOT able to do pattern cutting on this course.

What students need to bring:

All students will require a basic sewing kit, to include cutting out scissors, paper scissors, needles, pins, and a tape measure. For the first session these can be provided. A notebook, pen/pencil and a ruler are also useful. There are a small number of sewing machines available at the centre, but students really do need their own machine if possible.

Tutor Information:

Gaynor has been teaching for many many years. Having inspired young people in a local senior school she has moved onto to support adults learn and develop. She brings a rich knowledge of the subject with a warm and encouraging approach.
