Overview

This course is for those who are beginning their sewing journey - for both absolute beginners who have never been on a sewing machine before, as well as those who have spent a little time on their own machines. A variety of small projects will be undertaken, whilst also taking steps towards further understanding the sewing machine.

Who this course is suitable for

Absolute Beginners as well as those with a little experience are welcome.

Course description

In this course we will aim to complete a quilted zip bag, a lined tote bag, bunting and a quilted placemat. Each of these projects will help the student work with their sewing machine, whether they use their own or a provided one.

Each session will work towards understanding the sewing machine mechanism, threading and re-threading a machine, thread tension, cleaning and oiling the machine. We will aim to troubleshoot issues that might come up at home to gain more confidence in undertaking small projects at home.

What students need to bring 

Sewing machines if the student has one, there are a small number of sewing machines available at the centre, but it would be helpful for students to get to know their own machine if possible.

Materials for the week 1 quilted zip bag will be provided, 
- that is a zip, a piece of material half a meter squared (cotton) and some thin wadding. Should the student wish to bring their own half meter for the first session they are welcome to do so.

Further details for future projects will be provided in week one.

A basic sewing kit, which may include threads for the sewing machine, fabric scissors, a tape measure, ruler and a pen.
