Who is this course for:

Absolute Beginners as well as those with a little experience are welcome.

Course description

In this course we will start by making a small quilted placemat as an introduction to the quilting process - that is - securing 3 layers together (basting), sewing them together (quilting) and adding the binding around the edges. Then we will aim to make a small quilt by using patchwork on the machine to make the top layer. We will also cover the hand sewing patchwork technique - EPP - English paper peircing.

This course does not cover the introduction to the sewing machine as such.

What students need to bring

Sewing machines if the student has one, there are a small number of sewing machines available at the centre, but it would be helpful for students to get to know their own machine if possible.

Materials for the week 1 quilted placemat will be provided,
- that is enough material to make an average sized placemat, including the binding and the wadding. Should the student wish to bring their own material for the first session they are welcome to do so - front and back 40cm x 30cm (can be different design) and enough for binding strips, approx 1/4 of a metre.

Further details for future projects will be provided in week one.

A basic sewing kit, which may include threads for the sewing machine, fabric scissors, a tape measure, ruler and fabric marker pen. Safety pins for the basting will be useful ( there are also specialist basing pins which are useful but not strictly necessary for the first session.)

Tutor information.

Jennie has been home sewing for many years, making gifts for friends and family, she has a passion for quilting, and making long strings of bunting for outdoors!
